Board Game is the main mode of Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival. In this mode, up to 4 players can compete to see who can obtain the most happy points before the end of the game. By landing on happy spaces and obtaining a large amount of bells, the player may earn additional points throughout their turns and by the end of the results respectively. At the end of the game, the player will earn happy points for their amiibo based on how well they performed and unlock new outfits and emotions as they level up.
Rules
After the player has chosen their character and desired outfit, their turn order will be randomly shuffled and they will board the train that will take them to the board-game town. Upon reaching the town plaza, the player will be greeted by the current session's host who is randomly selected from all the villagers that are currently living in the board-game town. Before everyone gets to play, the host will ask the player if they already know the rules; if the player selects the first option, the rule hints will be off, while selecting the second option will make explanations pop up during gameplay every time something new happens.
Months and Days
The player must select a month before going to the player select screen. Each month offers a different season and a variety of events for the player to explore during their session. All of these take place in the board-game town that the player made when they first started the game. Like the main series, all the months and most of the events available in the board game are based on the real world and use the same amount of days as well.
Compared to the main series, days do not last 24 hours and are instead turns that only last for a few minutes depending on how many players have joined. A day will not pass until all players have ended their turns.
Number of Players
Solo
During solo, a single amiibo must be tapped and there will always be 3 CPUs joining the game. The only way for the player to circumvent this is to either tap a 2nd amiibo or have a human villager as the 2nd player who they will manually control.
Two - Four Players
Each player may tap in their amiibo to play as their chosen character. If only one amiibo is tapped, the other players can opt to play as one of the default human villagers whose names can be customized at the main plaza. However, human villagers cannot unlock additional outfits or emotions, nor can their facial features or hairstyles be customized.
Board Game Length
The board game may be played with or without a time limit. This option is always asked by the host after they give an estimate of how long the current game session might last, depending on how many players are currently taking part.
No time limit
By default, the board game does not have a time limit and the player is required to go through all the days of the month they've selected.
Time limit
If the player chooses to play the board game with a time limit, they may select from 30, 45, or 60 minutes. They may also opt out of this option if they have changed their mind, but once its set they cannot change it until either the game ends or they start over. A timer will appear under the month's date in the upper right corner and will keep ticking by as long as the game is not paused. Once it has 5 minutes or less remaining, it will begin blinking red. If the timer is lower than this once the current day ends, the host will offer the player an additional 10 minutes or to keep playing with what remains. If the player picks the latter option, the host will announce that the game will end in two days.
Stats
Happy Points: These are earned by landing on happy spaces, getting stamps from Lloid, events, fortune card effects, and double dice roll bonuses.
(-) Happy Points: These are earned by landing on sad spaces or negative fortune card effects when the player has 0 happy points or less. The player can only get rid of these by either earning enough happy points to reach 0 or more and by using a Change Luck card.
Bells: This is the currency used throughout the Animal Crossing series. Bells can be earned by landing on a happy money space, events, and fortune card effects. With bells, the player can purchase cards at Redd's shop and earn additional happy points at the end of the game. 1 Happy Point is awarded for every 1,000 bells the player has.
Bankruptcy: This occurs by landing on sad money spaces or negative fortune card effects when the player has 0 bells or less. For every day ending with bankruptcy, the player will lose 1 happy point. The player will be unable to buy any cards from Redd and the only way to get rid of this status is by either earning enough bells to reach 0 or more and by using a Change Money card.
Candy: Pieces of candy appear through the board during October. The counter will only display the joined total of every player's efforts and not individual efforts.
Ingredients: During Harvest Festival Eve and the Harvest Festival in November, ingredients will be scattered across the board that the player must gather. The list is checked whenever a player collects an ingredient.
Cards
The player may receive cards by earning them as a prize through a minigame, an event, or purchasing them from Redd's tent when they're visiting the town.
Item Cards
These cards may be used whenever the player's turn comes up before rolling the dice.

Fortune Cards

amiibo Cards
When the player's turn comes up, they may scan an amiibo card instead of rolling the standard dice to summon that particular villager to their side. Once summoned, the villager will roll a special dice that has the roll number that's displayed on the amiibo card itself, alongside an icon of themselves. Depending on the villager that was scanned, the dice may have more icons than numbers or vice versa. If the dice roll lands on the villager's face icon, it will result in whatever dice is shown on the villager's card. Afterwards, the villager will disappear. Due to this feature being advantageous for the player, they are only allowed to scan 5 cards per game session.
Events
During the game, different events will happen depending on what month and how may turns the player has chosen. While most of these are set to happen on an exact date or time frame, some of them occur at random.
Consistent Events
These are events that always occur during every month or are particular to an amiibo character that is either being played as or is currently living in the board-game town.
Stalk Market: After the first week ends, Joan will come to town on Sunday and give each player 10 turnips. The player is able to purchase additional turnips with their current amount of bells or completely refuse to purchase any. Joan's prices will change every week (always between 80-110 bells per turnip) and turnips can only be bought in stacks of 10, with no maximum. Once Monday rolls in, the current week's turnip prices will be set and they're as follows: steady, rising, crashing, or fluctuating.
Birthdays: If the player is using an amiibo character or has moved any villagers to their board-game town by using amiibo cards, birthday events will occur.
Random Events
As the player goes through the board, random events will occur. Some of these grant an effect that only lasts a single turn, while others last for a while and cause special NPCs to drop by for a visit and special-event spaces to appear as long as they're in town.
Opposite Day: The player's movements are reversed and they can only move backwards. Any space the player lands on will do the opposite effect and turnip prices will be hidden, except for the square that the player lands on once the turnip market option becomes available.
Twice Dice Day: The player is able to roll two dice at once. If both die land on the same number, the player will receive bonus happy points. Only occurs on the 11th or 22nd day of the month.
Turnip Value Down: When this event occurs, the turnip prices will go down for the remainder of the week.
Turnip Value Crashing: When this event occurs, the turnip prices will crash for the remainder of the week and most, if not all, spaces on the board will let the player sell them for a heavy loss.
Turnip Value Up: When this event occurs, the turnip prices will increase for the remainder of the week and some spaces will let the player sell them for a good price.
Turnip Value Fluctuating: When this event occurs, the turnip prices will go up and down drastically. All prices will be jumbled across the board-game spaces.
Stalk Market Closed: When this event occurs, the turnip market closes for the day and the player will be unable to sell any of their turnips until it reopens. Usually lasts for one day.
Katie's Visit: Landing on this space will allow the player to play a minigame with her. In this minigame, Katie will show the player a card with a number on it and the player must guess if the number of the second card will be higher or lower than the first one. If the player guesses correctly, Katie will reward them with the second card. If the player already has any cards on hand, she will instead offer them a trade of any one of their cards for whatever card she is holding at the moment.
Crazy Redd's Card Shop: Landing on this space will allow the player to enter his tent to purchase one of four cards with bells. Each player may only buy one card for 100 bells; the prices listed beside each card show how much it costs to use them. His stock will be different during every visit, though it will remain the same as long as the player lands on his space before he leaves.
Dr. Shrunk's Visit: Landing on this space will allow the player to play a minigame with him. In this minigame, the player spins a roulette with three randomized numbers between 1-6 and Dr. Shrunk's face on it to decide what joke and card he will reward the player with. If the roulette lands on the space with Dr. Shrunk's face, he will give the player any random card except Move X Cards.
Phineas's Visit: Landing on this space will allow the player to play a minigame with him. In this minigame, the player spins a roulette wheel that has the faces of every player that is on the current board game session. Whoever this roulette lands on will receive 2,000 bells. If there are only two players, there will be a rainbow space on the roulette; landing on it will reward everyone with 5 happy points and 1,000 bells.
Fortune-Teller's Shop: Landing on this space will allow the player to enter Katrina's fortune-telling tent. In there, the player may pick one of the face down cards and based on the result the player will have their fortune told. The effects of the fortune are different for each card and depending on whether they're upright or upside-down; their effects will last for one whole week and occur whenever the player or someone else rolls the same number as the one displayed on them.
Joan's Visit: Landing on this space will allow the player to talk with her. The effects of her space will change depending on what mood she arrived with. If she's happy, she will either reward the player with either additional turnips for free or reward extra bells. If she's sad, she will either ask for donations to help replace her turnips that were damaged by hooligans, complain that her back is too heavy and will share 10 of her turnips with you (this is an uncommon occurrence), or tell the player that all the turnips they had bought from her during that week are spoiled.
Monthly Events
Each month features a few different events, with the main ones being displayed on the in-game calendar when the player is selecting a month to play in.
By Special Villager
These events aren't listed in the in-game calendar, but they still occur on specific months:
Jack's Visit: On October 1st, Jack will visit the board-game town and spread candy throughout the board in bunches of 3 and 5. The player has until October 31st to collect as much candy as they can to trade it in for happy points. There's a total of 80 pieces of candy.
By Calendar
The events listed below only occur during each month, though some are shared throughout the season. Due to the board-game using the Wii U system's internal clock, the dates on the board will be affected just like in the main Animal Crossing series.

Happy Space Events
Happy spaces are all the pink-patterned spaces laid throughout the board. Whenever the player lands on these, a random positive event will occur. Happy points and bells are earned by landing on a space with the respective icon(s).
Sad Space Events
Sad spaces are all the gray-patterned spaces with inverted icons laid throughout the board. Whenever the player lands on these, a random negative event will occur. Happy points and bells are lost by landing on a space with the respective icon(s).
Customization
Once the player has gone through the board game at least once, the customization option will be available on the lower right corner of the gamepad screen before they start playing a game session. In here, players can choose to build houses for villagers, build features, or destroy features they've already built.
Build a house
To build a home for a new villager on the board-game town, the player must scan an amiibo card of their choosing. Afterward, they will be able to build the villager's house on any of the available plots of land (eight villagers maximum). If the player has a copy of Happy Home Designer and have a customized house saved on the card they scanned, the home's custom exterior and interior will appear in-game. If no plots of land are available, the player may scan another villager's card and place it upon any occupied plot of land to replace the one that's currently living there. Special villager amiibo cards or model-based amiibo figures cannot move into the board-game town.
Build or destroy a feature
Features are buildings and locations that the player can purchase to build in their town by spending happy tickets earned in any of amiibo Festival's game modes. When the player builds them in certain locations, they will unlock additional paths for the board game and new in-game events when landing on happy or sad spaces. All of the features the player can build are based on some of the Public Works Projects available in New Leaf. If the player has used up all the available plots of land for features, they must destroy a previously built one before building a new one. Features that are buildings, such as the Café, Police Station, Reset Surveillance Center, and Campsite, cannot be removed once they're built.

Trivia
- Unlike the main Animal Crossing series, the player is not restricted to only play during the current month's board and the days on the calendar are turns instead.
- Most of the features one can build contain various public works projects placed in a setup that is not possible in New Leaf, which is due to them needing free space all around them.
- Redd does not sell forged items to the player like in New Leaf.
