The ancient statue (いにしえのちょうこく, inishienochoukoku?, ancient sculpture) is a statue that appears in the Animal Crossing series. It makes its debut in New Leaf and is available for purchase at Crazy Redd's and can be collected by Happy Home Handbook in Happy Home Designer.

Dogū are small humanoid or animal figurines that were only manufactured in the Jōmon period (14,000 - 400 BC) in prehistoric Japan. These were believed to destroy illnesses and other misfortunes. The majority of examples of Dogū are supposedly modeled after female goddesses, having big eyes, small waists, and large hips which also suggest an association with fertility and shamanistic rites. Furthermore, the difference in the details of each Dogū depended on the area it was made.

Many of the Dogū, ranging from 10 - 30 cm tall were not entirely intact and were missing arms, legs, or other body parts, which in many cases are believed to be cut off in fertility rituals.

In New Horizons the sculpture can be donated to the museum and be added to the art gallery. As this sculpture can be bought from Jolly Redd's Treasure Trawler, players should keep in mind that they may be purchasing a forgery. The fake statue is one of the multiple haunted art pieces, and when interacted with at night, will begin to float.

Donation to the museum

After donating it to the museum, a museum label will give a description of the sculpture. In New Horizons, the museum label reads:

Jōmon Period "Dogū" Figurine Shakōki-dogū
Artist Unknown, 1000-400 BCE
Fired pottery

A mysterious, riveting doll made from kneaded, unglazed dirt during the Jōmon period. Its large round eyes resemble goggles that intercept light, so its name should come as no surprise. "Shakōki" means "light-intercepting goggles," and a dogū is a small animal figurine.

In New Leaf

In New Leaf, the forged statue has halfway opened eyes, whereas the genuine has closed eyes.
