A forgery is the outcome of buying a fake painting or sculpture from Redd. In every Animal Crossing series game except for New Leaf and New Horizons, a forged painting appears as a regular painting until sold to Tom Nook or donated to Blathers at the museum, where both may identify the picture.

Forged paintings in New Horizons

In New Horizons, it is possible to determine whether or not a painting is forged by visual inspection. Some areas of the painting will have a noticeable difference from the genuine painting. However, there are 14 paintings and two sculptures that will be authentic in all forms at all times.

Note that the forgeries in New Horizons are different from those in New Leaf.

Famous painting			In the forged painting, the woman has eyebrows which makes her look angry; whereas in the genuine one, she has no (or very faint) eyebrows which makes her look calm.

Graceful painting			In the forged painting, the woman takes up most of the space and covers the stain on the painting; whereas in the genuine painting, she only takes up around two-thirds of the painting.
Jolly painting			The forged painting is missing the artichoke bud sticking out of the chest, whereas the genuine one does.

Scenic painting			The forged painting has one person on the hill, whereas the genuine painting has three people and more dogs.
Serene painting			In the forged painting, the stoat has a grey coloration; whereas in the genuine one, it is a white ermine.

Solemn painting			In the forged painting, the man in the far back is pointing upwards; whereas in the genuine one, he is touching the wall.

Trivia

• If a glitch is done on a painting or sculpture, it then has a chance to change into the real painting or vice-versa. It is unknown as to why this occurs.
• Forgeries, when watched or interacted with, will occasionally move. Some of the paintings will change slightly, such as the girl in the Wistful Painting closing and opening her eyes, and the woman in the Graceful Painting turning her head, while some of the statues will react upon interaction, such as the Ancient Statue floating in the air.
