Badges are a new achievement system in New Leaf. They are awarded by Phineas, who will only appear on days with clear weather if the player meets the conditions for the new badge. Badges have three ranks: bronze, silver, and gold; they are received for a multitude of accomplishments, including catching bugs and accumulating playtime.
The Fish badge is awarded to players who have caught a variety of different fish. Badges depend on how much of their encyclopedia has been completed.

The Bell Saver badge is awarded to players who have saved a fair amount of Bells in their bank account. The badge only counts the bells the player currently has in their account; it is not awarded based on cumulative savings over the course of the gameplay.

Despite the flavor text for 'Tycoon Bell Saver' telling the player they need to save over 1 billion Bells, they only need to save 100,000,000 Bells. This is an error in the game. Furthermore, it is impossible to store more than 999,999,999 Bells in the bank account, which means if the number of Bells needed was 1 billion, it would be impossible to earn.

Trivia[]
The Gold Dreamer badge's name is a reference to the song "Mr. Sandman" by The Chordettes where the lyrics go: "Mr. Sandman, bring me a dream."
