- ""I caught a brown cicada! Now it probably feels blue, cicada."" —New Horizon
The brown cicada (アブラゼミ, Aburazemi?) is a common bug in the Animal Crossing series. It makes a unique chirping sound, which resembles what could be described as a continuous hissing rattle or vibrating (it is described in-game as the sound of frying). It is the most common of the cicada family and can be found alongside the robust, walker and evening cicadas at the right time of the day. It is limited to only summer. Because of this, in New Leaf, it is considered a seasonal item when placed as furniture in the house, giving bonus points from the Happy Home Academy during summer.
Donation to the museum[]
Like all bugs, the brown cicada can be donated to the Museum.
In Animal Crossing[]
Upon donation, Blathers will say:
"Cicadas. What can one say about these odd insects? They are certainly...noisy! Noisy enough, I should say! Their horrid caterwauling is awfully irritating, you know. About as musical as a train wreck, eh wot? I'm sure that the cicadas have quite valid reasons for such boisterous behavior, but I dare say there are limits. And they have those membranes on their abdomens, which vibrate to create those disturbing tones...Odius."
In Wild World[]
Upon donation, Blathers the curator will say:
"It's common knowledge that cicadas spend much of their lives in the ground, but... They are STILL too noisy! Honestly, they could be a slight more courteous, wot? Hoo, but then again, who would expect a wretched bug to have manners?"
In City Folk[]
"Ah, hoo, the brown cicada. The call of this creature is said to sound like hot oil sputtering, eh wot? I'm rather not sure that hearing the sound of deep-frying on a hot summer night is a pleasant thing..."
It can be found in the middle terrace, on the front-most tree of the middle island, sharing it with the Robust Cicada.
In New Leaf[]
In New Leaf an information board in the bug exhibit will list information about this bug.
"The crying of brown cicadas is usually associated with the sound of hot oil sputtering. Their wings are brown instead of being transparent, making them a rare species throughout the world. While completely harmless by themselves, in swarms they can cause devastation to crops."
In New Horizons[]
In New Horizons, upon donation or selecting "Tell me about this!", Blathers the curator will say (with abhorrence):
"Cicadas are obnoxious insects. And not just brown cicadas, mind you...but all cicadas! They flex ribboned membranes on their torso called tymbals to make a loud snapping sound. So rude! Hoo! Yes, it is only the males who make the noise. Sometimes at a volume that can produce pain at close range! Appallingly inconsiderate, I must say..."

- Main article: Graptopsaltria nigrofuscata on Wikipedia
The large brown cicada is a large cicada native to much of the Asian Pacific coast, including Japan, China, Korea and even as far south as New Zealand. They are often considered a pest by farmers because they attack and suck the sap out of crops in large numbers, generally killing the plant in question. Whilst they are not poisonous or dangerous in any way, if handled they may bite, which can hurt. Furthermore, the loud chirping song of the males can cause headaches at close proximity.
