Special characters

Special characters are animals in the game with unique features. They range from being shopkeepers, civic servants, visitors to the player's town, event hosts, and other unique functions. Most of the special characters appear in every Animal Crossing series game, but some, such as Lottie, are unique to certain games in the franchise. Special characters cannot be befriended like ordinary villagers, though Sable and Brewster demonstrate personality changes once talked to frequently, and Blathers, Label, and Tom Nook reveal information about their backstory when certain in-game parameters are met. Whereas some special characters reside in the player's town, such as Wilbur or Isabelle, the special characters which come to visit, such as Pascal or Franklin, cannot ever move into the character's town, unless they are visitors who later decide to open their own shop in the town after visiting, like Gracie in New Leaf.

Off-screen characters are categorized differently than special characters.

This table only displays the special characters physically seen in-game, i.e. it does not include special characters such as Clerk or Emcee, or mentioned characters such as the villager's Parents (Mom and Dad) or Moppina. Happy Home Designer[]

All special characters released prior to Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer (2015) with an amiibo card can be served as clients in the game. This includes all special characters, except Beppe, Carlo, C.J., Flick, Giovanni, Daisy Mae, Orville, Wilbur, Gullivarrr, Niko, and Wardell, given they were released after HHD in either Pocket Camp (2017) or New Horizons (2020).

Tom Nook owns Nook Homes in this game and employs Digby, Lyle, Lottie, and the player to work for him to meet the client's needs. Isabelle appears to request the player rebuild facilities.

Pocket Camp[]

Several special characters visit the player in Pocket Camp. Some characters, such as Chip and Katie, host events with rewards for the player while others, such as Kicks and Mabel, run shops out of campers in the Market Place.

Amiibo Festival[]

Cyrus, Digby, Isabelle, K.K. Slider, Lottie, Mabel, Reese, and Tom Nook appear in Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival as special characters to host games, compete, and provide other services to the player.

Trivia[]

• New Horizons was the first game several special characters didn't appear in a main series title despite being included in all other main series games, including Blanca, Booker, Chip, Copper, Don, Gracie, Joan, Pelly, Pete, Phyllis, and Wendell. This is the largest exodus of special characters in the series' history given it also includes the absence of special characters introduced in other games, including Dr. Shrunk, Franklin, Katie, Lyle, Nat, Phineas, and Porter who had appeared in at least two other games and the most recent game, New Leaf.
• C.J. (NH), Wardell (NH), Niko (NH), Daisy Mae (NH), Flick (NH), Frillard (CF), Orville (NH), Serena (CF), Gullivarrr (NH) and Wilbur (NH) have the least amount of in-game appearances for special characters in the main series (one).
• Joan sold turnips, Chip hosted the Fishing Tourney, Nat hosted the Bug-Off, and Phyllis, Pelly, and Pete operated the mail services and in every main series game until New Horizons where they were replaced by Daisy Mae, C.J., Flick, and Orville, respectively.
  • Don and Mr. Resetti operated the Reset Surveillance Center in every game until New Horizons where auto-saving was introduced.
    • Mr. Resetti instead operates Rescue Services in this game, alongside his older brother Don.
• It is heavily speculated that Cornimer is simply Tortimer wearing a mask.
• Dr. Shrunk and Mr. Resetti are the only special characters to regularly use honorifics.
  • Madam Rosa is the only villager to regularly use an honorific.

• Farley, Jack, Lloid, the Snowman family and, possibly, Zipper T. Bunny, are the only non-animal special characters seen in-game.
  • Parents (Mom and Dad) and Moppina are the only non-animal special characters referred to off-screen.

• Chestnut, aka Shaki (called Blazel by fans), was a beta special character in Animal Crossing who never actually made it into the game. It is thought that she might have been a traveling character similar to Joan, Redd, or Katrina.

Regional Trivia[]

• Blanca, Gracie and Saharah are the only special characters to change gender based on region. Gracie and Sahara are both male in the Japanese and Korean versions, but are female in all other versions. Blanca is female in all versions outside of Japan.
• Redd, Kapp'n and his family, Tom Nook, Timmy, and Tommy are the only special characters to change species based on region. Kapp'n and his family are kappas in the Japanese version, but are turtles in all other versions; Redd is a kitsune in the Japanese version, but a fox in all other versions; Tom Nook, Timmy, and Tommy are tanukis in the Japanese version, but raccoons in all other versions.

• Grams and Joan are the only noticeably elderly females in the series.
• Katie is the only special character to noticeably age.
• Farley, Jack, Lloid, and Wisp may be immortal given their species.

Special Character Relation Trivia[]

• Cyrus and Reese, Kapp'n and Leilani, and the player's parents are the only married couples in the game.
• Kaitlin, Kapp'n, and Leilani are the only special characters who appear in the series with their respective children, though Chip and CJ will show up at the Roost together if Chip's amiibo card is scanned.
  • Kaitlin is the only single mother in the series.
  • Chip and Nat are the only single fathers in the series.
  • Many villagers and special characters will, however, mention their parents, though they never appear.
    • This includes the player's parents.
• Grams and Joan are the only special characters to have grandchildren, Leila and Daisy Mae, respectively.
• Lyle is the only special character to have a niece, Lottie.
  • Tom Nook is often mistaken as the uncle of Timmy and Tommy given they are the same species.

Special Character Species Trivia[]

• Many special characters of the same species are related, including the owl siblings Blathers and Celeste, the mole brothers Don and Mr. Resetti, and the raccoon brothers Timmy and Tommy.
  • However, this is not always the case as the otters Lyle and Pascal as well as the pelicans Pelly, Phyllis, and Pete are unrelated, though Pelly is the younger sister of Phyllis.
• Characters of the same species are often attracted to one other such as the love triangle that exists between the pelicans Pelly, Phyllis, and Pete and the respective marriages of the alpacas Reese and Cyrus and the turtles Kapp'n and Leilani. In New Horizons, upon meeting Harvey and Harriet behind the photo studio, Harvey will mention how he calls Harriet "Hattie". He then blushes upon saying this, even though both dogs tell the player that they (Harvey and Harriet) have been friends for some time.
  • However, this is not always the case as the hedgehog Sable once had feelings for the raccoon Tom Nook. In Happy Home Designer, it is implied Lottie the otter and Digby the dog are dating.
• Dogs are the most common species of special characters as there are eight of them.
