Cousteau (ハルマキ,Harumaki?) is a jockfrogvillager in the Animal Crossing series. He first appeared in Animal Forest, but was absent in Wild World and made a reappearance in City Folk. His name is French, and some famous Frenchmen have had it as a second name. His name and personality together may refer to Jacques Cousteau. His initial phrase, "oui oui," is French for, "yes yes" (or agreement, so usually just "yes"). His species relates to the common French stereotype in which frogs are a type of food, specifically frog's legs. Like Cousteau, Gaston the rabbit and Marcel the dog are French.
However, Cousteau being labelled as French exists only outside of Japan. His name in Japanese is the word "Spring Roll," a traditionally Chinese dish. Thus, his name, house, as well as his appearance may lead him to be labelled as Chinese by some.
Cousteau is a yellow frog with orange spots. He also has a black mustache on his face which goes with his French name and quote. He has white on the tips of both hands, and a brownish color on his feet. His original shirt is a Rally Tee. He may be mistaken for a cranky villager due to his elderly and adult appearance.
Below is a brief description of the jock personality. For more information, click here.
Cousteau has a jock personality and has a great interest in sports and bodybuilding. Jock villagers are hyperactive and motivated but often come across as egotistical and dense. As a jock villager, Cousteau is very interested in his hobby, and may compete against the player at catching bugs and fish. Jock villagers get along with peppy, cranky and uchi villagers, but conflict with the laid-back lifestyle of lazy villagers. Snooty villagers may also be difficult to get along with for Cousteau.
Cousteau's house in Animal Crossing: New Leaf is a bit different from the past games. It now has an Asian restaurant feel to it, due to the Lazy-Susan Table, salad bar, and revolving spice rack. He still has Exotic furniture, such as the Exotic Table, and two Exotic Screens. He also still has the Exotic Rug, and Exotic Wall, as well as a Reel To Reel playing Imperial K.K.
Cousteau is a famous deep-sea diver in the village. But when he's not hunting down some rare species of Coelacanth or Barred Knifejaw, he's cooking up a gourmet meal for his family and friends.
"Eets been a busy year for me. Kapp'n has asked me to help weeth hees boat. Oui Oui. Zee men want me to wrestle zee Barred Knifejaw. And zee ladies want pastries! My life ees full of delicious adventure! I hope yours ees too!! "
