My! My! Welcome!
― Digby, upon being talked to by the player.

Digby (ケント, Kento?) is a dog who is in charge of the Happy Home Showcase in New Leaf, and is the younger twin brother of Isabelle. He can be seen standing at the Showcase's entrance all day long. He also makes a return in New Horizons as part of Happy Home Paradise, or can be invited with his amiibo to The Roost.

In order to get into the Showcase, the player must first speak with him. Once inside, the player may visit the houses of other players they have met through StreetPass.

In Happy Home Designer, he is a normal staff member at Nook's Homes. His job is to help the player with rebuilding facilities they have already built. This feature is unlocked after upgrading the school with Isabelle.

In Pocket Camp, he returns to work at the Happy Home Academy, but instead of being the gatekeeper of the Happy Home Showcase, he is one of the Happy Homeroom Judges.

Personality[]

Digby has a relaxed personality much like his sister, Isabelle. He is patient and very straight-forward, although he sometimes feels concerned about his job being the gate guard of the Happy Home Showcase area. He also gets along with his sister Isabelle, as she does also.

Appearance[]

Digby is mostly brown in coloration. He wears a white shirt under his red suit coat, accompanied with a yellow tie and blue pants. On rainy or snowy days, he will wear a yellow raincoat and red boots. He resembles Isabelle in his features; he has the same eyes, but his white patch is seen running up the middle of his face and he has a tuft of hair sticking out on the top of his head. He also has six pink freckles, with three on each cheek.

In New Leaf[]

In New Leaf, he stands on Main Street outside the Happy Home Academy. When it's rainy, he wears his yellow raincoat. The player may talk to him, which grants access to the Happy Home Showcase, in which they can visit the homes of other players using the Nintendo 3DS's StreetPass feature.

In Happy Home Designer[]

Digby also appears in Happy Home Designer, where he plays as the player's co-worker. Digby's job is to work with all of the paperwork related to new facility buildings that are added to the town, and they will usually see him at the end of the day finishing up some of his work. He doesn't interact with the player much, though he is an important character. After designing enough facilities, Digby will give the player the option to rebuild any facilities that they already have, and takes over instead of Isabelle during remodeling days.

In amiibo Festival[]

Digby is a playable character in amiibo Festival, available when the Digby amiibo is scanned on the Wii U. Sometimes when the player playing as Digby lands on an event square in the Amiibo Festival Board Game mode, a random event specifically related to Digby may appear.

Digby has 6 unlockable costumes for the game, unlocked through leveling up the Digby amiibo:

  • Nook's Homes employee (Level 1)
  • Raincoat (Level 2)
  • Nook's Homes logo T-shirt (Level 3)
  • K logo jacket (Level 4)
  • Blue and white-striped sweatshirt (Level 5)
  • Formal red jacket (Level 6)

In New Horizons[]

By scanning any of Digby's amiibo, the player may invite him to The Roost, where he will bring Isabelle to drink coffee; Photopia, where you can take photos with him; or Happy Home Paradise, where you can design his house.

Trivia[]

  • Digby shares his birthday with Isabelle (December 20th), because they are twins. He is the younger of the two.
    • He and Isabelle also share their birthday with Rudy.
  • There are some references or possible meanings throughout Digby's international names:
    • His English name, Digby, derives from the Old English dic "dyke, ditch") and Old Norse byr "farm, settlement", possibly relating to his career in architecture. The name is also likely a pun the word dig, referencing that dogs sometimes dig holes.
    • His English name coupled with Isabelle's French name, Marie, could form a pun referencing singer Marié Digby.
    • His English name may also be a reference to the dog mascot of the paint company Dulux named Digby, whom has been in the 1973 movie "Digby, the Biggest Dog in The World", which also ties in with Digby's home showcase occupation.
    • His Japanese name, Kento (ケント?), borrowing of the English name Kent doubling as a pun on the on'yomi of the kanji for dog ( inu?), ken (ケン?).
    • His Spanish name, Candrés, is a pun between the Spanish word can (from canis, meaning "dog" in latin) and the name Andrés (meaning "manly"). This naming is shared for Isabelle's Spanish name, Canela.
    • His French name, Max, has several interpretations of meaning.
      • Max is a shortening of Maximilien and/or related names, meaning "largest" or "greatest".
      • Max is a popular name for dogs in the United States and France.
      • His name is alliterative with Isabelle's French name, Marie.
    • His German name, Moritz (equivalent to Maurice), has several interpretations of meaning.
      • His name is alliterative with Isabelle's German name, Melinda.
      • Moritz can mean "dark-skinned," comparable to his dark fur color.
      • He might be named after Carl Moritz, famous German architect and real estate entrepreneur.
    • His French name coupled with his German name may be a reference to the famous dark comedy book Max und Moritz. The character, Moritz, is also an anthropomorphic dog that is friends with a human.
    • His Italian name, Fofò, is alliterative with with Isabelle's Italian name, Fuffi, and is similarly bisyllabic.
    • His Korean name, Kent (켄트), is a translation of his Japanese name or a direct borrowing of the English Kent.
    • His Chinese name, 西施德 (Xīshī Dé), possibly comes from the origin and transcription of his and Isabelle's Japanese names. "西施 (Shih Tzu)" is a re-translation of his dog breed name origin back into Chinese. 德 (Dé) also sounds similar to the beginning of Digby.
      • The Han characters also have meaning by themselves. These are largely shared with Isabelle's name, Xīshī Huì (西施惠).
        • 西施 xīshī is a figurative phrase to mean "beautiful woman" or "fallen flower."
        • can be used to mean "benefit, favor, kindness"; "faith, morality, virtue"; or even short for 德意志 Déyìzhì "Germany."
  • It's impossible to get in or out of the Happy Home Showcase without Digby as the player cannot sneak past him.
  • If the player attempts to walk past Digby when leaving the Happy Home Showcase, he will strike up conversation with the player regarding them leaving.
  • If Digby reveals one of his coffee preferences at the cafe, he will also mention Isabelle's; however, it will not be highlighted like other coffee preference dialogues.
  • Digby has the voice of a jock villager.
  • Digby was the one who gifted Isabelle with the clothes she wears during a Fireworks Show.
  • In Happy Home Designer, Lottie is shown to have a huge crush on Digby. He seems oblivious to this, though.
  • When speaking to Digby early in Happy Home Designer, he mentions that his work is really stressful, but he is dedicated to getting it done so he doesn't let anyone down.
  • If you scan his amiibo and design a house for him in Happy Home Designer, the next time you visit, Lottie will also be there and he will say they are on a date.
  • Digby did not personally appear in New Horizons until the implementation of The Roost in the 2.0.0 Update. Before then, Digby was only visible in his collectible poster, and occasionally Isabelle would mention him and their parents (albeit not by name) during her morning announcements.
  • In New Horizons, Digby will reference that he evaluates homes for the Happy Home Academy on many players' islands when spoken to in The Roost.
