His catchphrase comes from the Hindu word "om", often said while meditating. His name may be a reference to the classic R&B musician Dobie Gray, famous for the song "Drift Away", or adobe clay, a reference to his appearance as a Mexican wolf. His German and Italian names reference Sigmund Freud, and his French name includes loup (wolf) and means "little boy"; likely intended to be ironic.
Dobie is a murky-colored gray Mexican wolf. His underbelly is a little lighter than his main fur, and he has lighter points, except for his ears, which are darker. He has a round, black nose and thick eyebrows. Dobie's eyes are rarely shown open. In Animal Crossing and the other earlier games, he wears the Blue Aloha shirt, like all male islanders, but this is changed to the sweater vest in New Leaf. He appears to be elderly due to his wrinkles; this is also support by his picture quote, "Old longings never truly fade."
Below is a brief description of the lazy personality. For more information, click here.
As a lazy villager, Dobie will be friendly and easy to get along with due to his laid back lifestyle. Like all lazy villagers, he has a love of food and relaxing. He will enjoy partaking in the usual hobbies, usually for relaxing reasons or for food, like when fishing. Dobie will get along well with other villagers, but may offend or confuse jock villagers, who have a lifestyle of exercise and fitness, which conflicts with the lazy lifestyle of relaxing and food. He will get along with other lazy villagers with whom he will talk about food, comics, or superheroes. He will also get along well with normal, peppy, smug and sisterly villagers, and occasionally cranky villagers, but may from time to time annoy snooty villagers, who disagree with the lazy lifestyle.
Below is a brief description of the cranky personality. For more information, click here.
Cranky villagers will usually appear in a grouchy or agitated mood and are more difficult to befriend than most other villager types. When talking to the player, cranky villagers tend to become angry if the player disagrees with them or refuses to do a favor. Like all cranky villagers, Dobie will be invested in his hobby and will often challenge the player to various competitions. He will easily get along with jock, snooty and other cranky villagers, and occasionally lazy and normal villagers as well. However, he will find it hard to socialize with peppy villagers, as they will seem overstimulated or immature. Dobie will also enjoy spreading rumors about other villagers.
Dobie's default interior in Animal Crossing and the other earlier games consists of nothing but a tea vase. He has the bamboo flooring and the imperial wall. In earlier versions of the game, if given a stereo, he plays Comrade K.K.
In New Leaf, Dobie's house has a home office theme with items such as the editor desk, editor's chair, and large bookshelf. There are also various office (Document Stack, Scattered Papers) and book themed items scattered among the floor and upon a console table such as two stacks of books, book stands, and strapped books. This may allude to Dobie being a writer or author. Dobie also has a modern bed and a phonograph, the latter of which plays K.K. Lament. The exterior of Dobie's house appears very worn down and tattered.
In New Horizons, Dobie's house has a cosy office theme, with various writing and reading related objects. His phonograph plays Agent K.K.
As an islander in Animal Crossing, he has a favorite fruit and a fruit that he is allergic to. Feeding him the allergy fruit will reduce the likelihood of his dropping money bags. Dobie is allergic to Cherries and loves Peaches.
