The lobby of the Dream Realm, or Dreamscape

Similar to the Dream Suite feature in New Leaf, dreaming is a feature in New Horizons that not only allows players to upload and share "dreams" of their islands to the internet, but also allows them to visit other players' dream islands with the use of a specific Dream address or selecting "Surprise me!" after selecting "Yeah, I want to sleep."

Activated by lying down on a bed inside the player's house, Luna will appear in the player's dream state after selecting the option "Yeah, I want to sleep." Players cannot change the state of the island they are dreaming about. Dreaming cannot occur if the player is in a wand transformation.

Sharing a dream[]

Sharing a dream of the player's island requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. Luna will capture a copy of the current state of the player's island, including its outdoors, building and house interiors, bulletin board messages, the presence of the campsite tent, and the player's name and passport. Redd's trawler will never be present in the dream island even if he was docked at the time of upload.

Islands can be uploaded once per day with the exact time and weather present on the island when the player uploaded it. Each island will receive a unique Dream address where the player's progress can be saved accordingly for anyone who wishes to visit if a player decides to revamp the entirety of their island. The player's address can be private or public on their passport.

Visiting other dreams[]

Visiting other players' dreams requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. When visiting a dream, Luna will hold onto the player's inventory for the duration of the dream. If the player takes anything from another island, it won't show up in their inventory when they wake up. Similarly, while dreaming, players cannot learn DIY recipes, catalog items, etc. However, swimming and diving are accessible if the visitor wore a wet suit when going to bed, and tools can be used if the owner dropped them on the ground before uploading their island.

Other additions include talking to villagers that will have special dialogue, shaking trees (items won't be added to the player's inventory), visiting homes, etc. The host of the island will reply with a slogan, which can be changed on the player's passport. The main shops will not be open despite the time the island was uploaded. If the Campsite tent is present, the visitor cannot enter it. Jolly Redd's Treasure Trawler will also not be present in the dream even if it was docked during the upload. However, the museum will be accessible for any visitors upon arrival. The custom design kiosk in the plaza will showcase the owner's personal custom designs that the player can save to their NookPhone. This replaces Wendell in New Leaf who would give the player Pro Designs in the dream world.

If the player calls for the rescue service, Resetti will drop them off at the plaza of the dream the player is currently in. Only some of the NookPhone's apps have full functionality. These include the Camera, Map, Chat Log, and Best Friends List.

Players have the option to report another's dream for any violations. Speaking to Luna and selecting the "Report dream" option allows the player to report an island. It can be used to report specific harmful content. There are 8 options, but the last option "Other" can be used to further specify the violation type.

In the 1.5.0 Fall Update, players gained the ability to view a list of dreams they have visited before.

In the 1.6.0 Winter Update, players gained the ability to randomly visit any dream islands that have been previously uploaded by selecting the "Surprise me" option.

In the 2.0 Fall Update, players gained the ability to search for dreams by name of island.
