- Main article: Flying fish on Wikipedia
The Exocoetidae, often known as flying fish or flying cod, are a family of marine fish belonging to the order Beloniformes, class Actinopterygii. There are about 64 species divided into seven to nine genera. While they cannot fly like birds, flying fish can take tremendous, self-propelled leaps out of the water, gliding for long distances above the water's surface because of their wing-like fins. The main purpose for this action is believed to be to escape underwater predators.
