Furniture customization

Furniture customization is the process of modifying the appearance of certain furniture items.

In New Leaf and Happy Home Designer

Cyrus customizes certain furniture items for a small amount of Bells. The process takes 30 minutes. Once customized, the furniture leaf will become red, or golden-yellow if the fabric is customized with a clothing or custom design. If a custom design is used, the customized item will change if the player modifies the design. Furniture customized with custom designs cannot be sent as a letter attachment. Players will receive a badge from Phineas in New Leaf for refurbishing 30, 100 and 200 items.

Cyrus is also mentioned in Happy Home Designer as being the one who refurbishes catalog items.

In New Horizons

The player can customize certain furniture items at any DIY workbench using Customization Kits. Items in the list of DIY recipes that can be customized are marked with a paintbrush icon in the top left corner. They are also highlighted while selecting an item to customize.

Items customized with a predetermined option do not have a unique furniture leaf, and can be attached to letters.

Villagers are also able to gift them to the player. Items customized with custom patterns have a golden-yellow leaf, and cannot be attached to letters nor dropped as an item.

After the player befriends Sable, she will begin giving special design patterns used to customize fabric on certain items (such as beds). These are stored separately from the player-created patterns.

Special Customization (New Leaf only)

Fossil Customization

If the player brings a complete set of fossils (for example, an archelon skull and an archelon torso) to Cyrus along with a handful of Bells, Cyrus will make a miniature version of the complete fossil. This miniature version takes up one tile in the player's house and contributes to their Happy Home Academy score.

Ore Customization

If the player brings three gold nuggets to Cyrus, he will allow the player the option of having him make a piece of furniture from the Golden Series. This will cost 10,000 Bells and take, as with all customization, 30 minutes to complete. The piece from the series he produces is completely random.

In New Horizons

In New Horizons, after the player has paid off the first house expansion, Tom Nook will offer a class on customizing furniture. To customize furniture, the player needs to use customization kits at a workbench. Since the 2.0 update, players can be able to customize "ready-made" items (from Nook's Cranny, Nook Shopping's daily items, etc.) by handing them to Cyrus at Harv's Island.
