Players fishing at the beach.

The Ocean is an area found in all games in the Animal Crossing series is located along the southern edge of the town (In New Leaf, beaches can be on the west and east side as well).

Beach

Where the ocean meets the land, a beach forms. When the player walks on the beach they will leave footprints that will disappear after a short time. If they trip in the sand, a large facial imprint appears.

Shells wash up on the beach daily, and can be picked up and sold for Bells, with the amount of bells received being dependent on the type of shell sold. In Animal Forest e+ and New Leaf, this is the only place to find the Hermit Crab and Crab and in New Leaf, is the only place to find the Wharf Roach.

In Wild World, a Note-in-a-bottle will wash up occasionally. They can also be sent from the beach.

Beatches

Coconuts will also wash up on shore in Wild World and City Folk. Coconut Palms will only grow near the beach, where many rare night-time bugs are located. In New Leaf, Banana Palms were introduced. They function identically to the Coconut Palms.

Furthermore, in Animal Crossing and New Leaf, Gulliver may wash up on the beach on random days. He must be awoken by talking to him several times (or speak to him with the megaphone and will be awoken instantly) and will often tell you a story about his intended destination or life at sea. In Animal Crossing he gives out a piece of rare furniture. In New Leaf, he will send you an item in the mail the next day, only if you answer his question correctly. In City Folk, the crash site of Gulliver's UFO is also on the beach.

In New Leaf, some maps have both slopes leading to one beach, meaning there is a bit of land left over, often cut off from the rest of the beach by a cliff or waterfall. Most people call this a private or secret beach.

Sea

Many fish can only be caught in the sea. In New Leaf, players can explore the ocean with the Wetsuit available on Tortimer Island. This is the only way to get some of the Deep-Sea Creatures to fill the Museum and may also be the only way of getting to other parts of the beach if it is cut off by a cliff or river.

A dock in the sea is the only place to get to the Island in Animal Crossing and New Leaf.
