“Could you, uh...give me a little space for a while? Please? Kidders?”
― Pashmina, New Leaf
Pashmina (バーバラ, Bābara?, Barbara) is a sisterly goat villager in New Leaf. Her name comes from the pashmina, a scarf which is made from cashmere, a fiber obtained from goats. Her initial phrase "kidders" is possibly derived from the word "kid," another word for a young goat. Her Japanese name comes from, "baa," the sound that both sheep and goats make, and the common name, "Barbara."
She appears on the cover of Mr. K.K.. She has the music hobby.
Appearance[]
Pashmina is a brown goat with straight-cut, dark brown bangs and light aqua horns. She also has yellow eyes with a grayish rose colored muzzle, eyelids, and inner ears. This color also fades from her hooves up her arms and legs. She initially wears a corseted shirt in New Leaf, and in New Horizons she wears a rainbow sweater.
Personality
Below is a brief description of the sisterly personality. For more information, click here. |
Pashmina is a sisterly villager. When befriended, she will give the player fighting tips and teach them ways to relax. Pashmina will also give the player medicine if they are stung by a wasp. Like all sisterly villagers, Pashmina is tough, but she will still care deeply about her appearance. Pashmina has a tendency to stay up very late at night. It is easy to get her picture since developing friendships with sisterly villagers is simple due to her caring and protective nature, sometimes talking to the player about her friendship with her old neighbor's son. Pashmina may get along with jock villagers who share her love of sports, lazy and normal villagers for how laid-back they are, and peppy villagers. However, she may conflict with smug and snooty villagers due to their arrogant nature. Pashmina may clash with cranky villagers due to their similarly stubborn personalities, but often end up becoming best friends.
House[]
Most of Pashmina's starting furniture in New Leaf consists of the Rococo Series, along with some string instruments and a music stand. The Gyroid in her house is a Tall Lullaboid. She has K.K. Tango playing on her Retro Stereo.
In New Horizons, Pashmina's house is a retro diner. She has a selection of items from the Diner series to supplement this, including the Neon sign, Mini table, and two Counter tables, which have a black Laptop sitting on them. Her kitchen is made up of a red Double-door refrigerator and System kitchen. She also has a Jukebox which plays K.K. Disco and a red Cute sofa.

Trivia[]
- Different meanings can be found in Pashmina's international names:
- Her English, Italian, Dutch, and Russian names, Pashmina (RUS: Пашмина), is the name of a variant of cashmere sourced from the Changthangi breed of goat native to the Kashmir region of northern India, namely Ladakh. Pashmina (Persian پشمین pašmin) derives from پشم (pašm, meaning "wool", in Kashmir specifically referring to the unspun wool of the Changthangi), which ultimately comes from the Proto-Indo-European *peḱ-, meaning "(to pluck) wool".
- The name might be a nod to the Hamtaro (1997-2000) character Pashmina (マフラーちゃん Mafurā-chan), due to them being big sister-figures to the other characters (hence why Pashmina is a sisterly villager).
- Her Japanese, Korean, and Chinese names (JPN: バーバラ Bābara; KOR: 바바라 Babara; CHN: 芭芭拉 Bābālā) are transliterations of the Greek name Barbara (Βαρβάρα), deriving from Ancient Greek βάρβαρος (bárbaros, "strange, foreign"). The names also contain syllables homophonous with baa, an onomatopoeia associated with caprines (sheep and goats).
- Barbara is also similar to Barbari, another breed of goat found in India and Pakistan, named after the city Berbera in Somalia. Unlike Changthangi, Barbari are not raised for their wool, just their meat and milk.
- There are individual meaning for the characters in her Chinese name, ones which may reflect upon an interest in flowers (per her Happy Home Paradise request).
- 芭 bā refers to a kind of fragrant grass, or shorthand for 芭蕉 bājiāo "banana". It can also be an alternative form of 葩 pā, which has obsolete definitions of "flower" or "beautiful".
- 拉 lā can mean many things such as "to drag (out)", "to bring up; raise", "to cut; slash", or an onomatopoeia for the wind.
- Her French name, Chavrina, appears to derive from chèvre, the French word for a female goat (see Chevre) with the feminine derivational suffix -ina added.
- Her German name, Pamela, is an English female name of uncertain etymology, first used in The Countess of Pembroke's Arcadia (1593). The name is widely taken to mean "all sweetness", likely formed on the Greek words πᾶν (pan, "all") and μέλι (meli, "honey").
- Her Spanish name, Carla, is feminized version of Carl, Carlos or Charles, from the Old English ceorl "free man". Carla also is phonetically and orthographically similar to cabra, the Spanish word for "female goat", from Latin capra.
- Pashmina's birthday is December 26th, making her a Capricorn (the horned goat zodiac). She is the only goat whose birthday is in December, and was the only goat who was a Capricorn until Sherb's introduction in New Horizons.
- Her birth in the Christmas season may be in reference to the Yule goat, a Scandinavian and Northern European iconography associated with Yule and Christmas.
- In New Horizons, Pashmina's preferred styles are Cool/Elegant, and her preferred colors are Colorful/Red.
