My Cy-Guy is the very best when it comes to refurbishing!
― Reese, New Leaf

Reese (リサ, Risa?, Lisa) is a pink alpaca who makes her debut in New Leaf. She works at Re-Tail with Cyrus, her husband. She is the one that the player can sell things to, ask for turnip prices, and can ask to display an item for villagers to buy. Villagers may come in and ask to buy the player's items from Re-Tail. Reese also makes an appearance in Pocket Camp and amiibo Festival. In New Horizons, she makes appearance at the Wedding Season with Cyrus.

Appearance[]

Reese is a pink alpaca, with pink hair, a white face highlighted by both pink lipstick and a rosy blush, black eyes, a brown nose, pink lipstick, and yellow inside her ears. She wears a red apron with a pink heart, blue crosses that resemble stitches, and two gold buttons. She has black hooves for her hands and feet. During Wedding Season, her black hooves are white. During that time, she may have been wearing gloves.

Role[]

In New Leaf[]

Reese is the owner of the store Re-Tail along with her husband, Cyrus. She appears from the very beginning of the game and the store she runs, Re-Tail, and the four main stands in the middle of the store are taken up with items. Once the player buys them, they do not fill up again unless the player or another villager from their town asks to sell something.

She also pays Bells for items that the player may no longer need. Unlike selling at the Nookling stores, Reese can buy anything from the player, which can include tools and unappraised fossils. Reese will dispose of trash for a fee of 80 bells per item, or higher amounts for used fireworks, spoiled turnips, or spoiled fruit.

Besides purchasing no longer needed items and disposing of trash, her store also comes with a flea market where players can sell and buy items there. There are 8 different slots available, and interacting with slots allows the player to buy or sell items.

Reese is also the contact for the stalk market and states the current market value of turnips both in the morning and when the prices change after noon. She buys turnips according to these prices. However, she cannot buy turnips on a Sunday, as turnip prices do not establish on a Sunday.

In amiibo Festival[]

Reese is a playable character in amiibo Festival, available when the Reese amiibo is scanned on the Wii U. Sometimes when the player playing as Reese lands on an event square in the Amiibo Festival Board Game mode, a random event specifically related to Reese may appear.

Reese has 6 unlockable costumes for the game, unlocked through leveling up the Reese amiibo:

  • Re-Tail work apron (Level 1)
  • Heart logo sweatshirt with red skirt (Level 2)
  • Red sweater with the design (Level 3)
  • Re-Tail logo jacket (Level 4)
  • Light pink jacket (Level 5)
  • Wedding dress/bride (Level 6)

In Pocket Camp[]

Reese, alongside Cyrus, crafts items for the player in exchange for bells or leaf tickets.

In New Horizons[]

Reese appears in the Wedding Season event in June, where the player gets to take wedding themed photos of her and Cyrus on Harv's Island. She rewards the player with Heart Crystals which are required to purchase limited Wedding themed furniture, from Cyrus.

Once the player fulfills the requirements to unlock a plaza on Harv's Island, the player can donate 100,000 bells to unlock Reese and Cyrus' permanent co-op in which Cyrus is able to customize any type of customizable item for a fee. While Reese isn’t shown actively participating in the process, it’s stated by Harvey that she helps Cyrus pick out the colors.

Personality[]

Reese is a kind and loving clerk. She provides services to all villagers and job owners alike by buying things from them and providing charity. She loves her husband, Cyrus, and often calls him "Cy-Guy". Like Cyrus about male characters, Reese will occasionally become jealous towards other girls adoring her husband.

According to Reese, her and Cyrus met as they made eye contact when he drove by on his motorcycle, which consequently caused him to crash into an ice-cream truck. Reese took him to the emergency room, and they've been together ever since.

Trivia[]

  • Different meanings can be found in Reese's international names:
    • Her English and Dutch names, Reese, is a unisex given name that is the Anglicized form of Welsh Rhys, from Old Welsh Ris "ardor, fiery warrior".
      • Her Russian name, Риз Riz, is a transliteration of Reese that is closer to the Old Welsh root. Unrelated to риз riz, the genitive plural of ри́за ríza "robe; chasuble".
      • Her and Cyrus' names collectively appear to a play on the English verb recycle, and by extension its Dutch and Russian translations (DUT: recycleren; RUS: рециркули́ровать recirkulírovatʹ).
      • The name Reese peaked in popularity in 2012 (the year she debuted in the Japanese version of New Leaf), becoming the 128th most popular female child name in the United States of America. This is coincidental, as New Leaf didn't release in English countries until June 2013.
    • Her Japanese and Korean names, Risa (JPN: リサ; KOR: 리사), are transliterations of the feminine name Lisa. This is a diminutive of the English name Elizabeth descended from Ancient Greek Ἐλισάβετ Elisábet, itself a transliteration of Biblical Hebrew אלישבע‎ (Elisheva "my God is an oath"; from אל el "God (of Israel)" + נשבע nishbá'‎ "to promise, to swear").
      • It is also possible that Risa doubles as a clipping of the Japanese transliteration of recycle (リサイクル (risaikuru?)) or its declinations. As a word, risa means "laughter" in several Romantic languages, and is an inflection of Latin risus (see French name below).
      • Due to the Japanese name of Re-Tail, her full name in the Japanese translation may be Lisa Parker (JPN: パーカー リサ (Pākā Risa?)). The English surname Parker derives from Old French parquier "keeper of the park", ultimately from Proto-Germanic *parrukaz "enclosure, fence".
      • Additionally, 리사 Risa is alliterative with Cyrus' Korean name, 리포 Ripo.
    • Her French name, Risette, is an uncommon name made from the French colloquialism risette, meaning "small smile" (often that of a child's). The root word ris is cognate to risa, both coming from L. rīsus, which means "laughter", "smile", or "mockery; joke".
    • Her Spanish name, Paca, is a diminutive of the Romantic feminine name Francisca, meaning "Frank woman; woman from France".
      • When combined with Cyrus' Spanish name, Al, her and her husband's names recreate the word alpaca, their species.
      • Coincidentally, paca is also the name of small mammals native to South America like alpacas, however pacas (from Guaraní paka; of genus Cuniculus in order Rodentia) and alpacas (from Aymara allpaqa; of genus Lama in order Artiodactyla) are distantly related in terms of both etymology and taxonomy.
    • Her German name, Rosina, is an Italian diminutive of the feminine given name Rosa (Latin for "rose" and the entailed pink color), referencing her fleece color.
    • Her Italian name, Alpaca, is her species name, borrowed by the Spanish from the Aymara's native word allpaqa. In Italian, alpaca is also used to refer to the animal's fleece or fabrics made using it.
    • Her Chinese name, Lìyǒng (simp. 莉咏; trad. 莉詠), is phonetically and visually similar to the verb 利用 lìyòng "to use; to utilize; to make use of". Further meaning can be found in the individual Han characters:
      • is within the same phonetic series as the hanzi 利, which can mean "to benefit; to be beneficial to" or "to profit". It can also be a surname.
      • yǒng (traditionally 詠) can mean "to sing; to hum; to chant", or to describe in poetic language.
  • If the Japanese name of Reese and Re-Tail (R. Parkers' R・パーカーズ (R·Pākāzu?)) are taken into account, Reese and Cyrus may be one of the few characters to have surnames (Parker パーカー (Pākā?)) besides the Nooks and Ables.
  • She shares her birthday with the jock mouse Samson. Both of them have a birthday on July 5th.
  • The Wedding Season event indicates that Reese married Cyrus in the month of June. As the anniversary celebrations last the entirety of the month, the exact date of their wedding is unknown.
  • She and Cyrus are Katrina's metaphor for love when telling a fortune.
  • In New Leaf, she has the voice of a peppy villager, while in New Horizons, she has the voice of a normal villager. Cyrus' voice was similarly changed in the 2020 installment.
