Mr. Resetti, New Leaf

Resetti, known as Mr. Reset in Japan, is a very cranky mole that appears throughout the Animal Crossing series. His role is to make sure that players save continuously throughout gameplay. The more the player resets (or turns off power without saving), the harsher he gets in his responses.

In the first generation of Animal Crossing games, he will force a first-person perspective and shout at the player during his most angry response. In City Folk, sometimes he will pretend to sound "kind" in order to sound intimidating. In New Leaf, however, his most angry response is limited to becoming irritated from the number of taps the player does on the touch screen during his lengthy lectures.

In earlier installments, specifically before New Leaf, at a certain number of resets Resetti may force the player to answer questions using a slider with dubious labels or to repeat sentences exactly as written. Additionally, resetting the game too many times on earlier installments will lead to a fake "reset", intended to scare the player into not resetting again.

When Resetti's calmer, older brother Don Resetti appears, he will reveal Resetti's nickname as "Sonny" in Animal Crossing, City Folk, and New Horizons.

Physical Appearance[]

Resetti is a brown mole with a large snout and whiskers. He has rather thick eyebrows and his eyes are almost always closed or squinted, possibly to indicate the poor eyesight of moles. When he is upset, his mouth forms a large square while his eyes bug out. He also is frequently seen with a pickaxe to dig to the player.

Clothing[]

In Animal Forest, Resetti wears a white shirt, along with a yellow hard-hat with green stripes. In Animal Crossing and later games, he wears a white T-shirt, blue denim overalls, and a plain yellow hard hat. However, this isn't the case for all games as in Gekijōban Dōbutsu no Mori his shirt is long-sleeved instead of shortened and in New Horizons he wears his usual outfit without a hard-hat. Additionally, if Resetti's house is designed in Happy home designer the player can visit him and find him in casual wear. His casual wear includes a white shirt, dark green pants, and no hard-hat. In Happy Home Paradise, if the player scans Resetti's amiibo, they can bring him to Photopia and get his poster.

Personality[]

Mr. Resetti is very short-tempered, and while initially understanding and less harsh to the player (especially in New Leaf - where the player is given the option to tell him the reason why they reset), he will quickly get angrier and angrier at the player, the more they reset. In City Folk, he will even bring up that his doctor has told him not to yell so much. While he works for the Reset Surveillance Center, he has a strong opposition towards the concept of a reset button.

In New Horizons, Resetti appears to be more accepting with the concept of the reset button, likely as a result of acknowledging obsolescence of the reset button and his retirement from doing reset surveillance. He still makes the odd outburst, but swiftly apologizes about his imbalance of coffee consumption. Overall, he is a lot more calm than in previous generations.

Role[]

In Animal Forest+/Animal Crossing[]

Mr

Mr. Resetti from Animal Forest and Animal Forest+.

Resetti's role in Animal Forest+ and Animal Crossing stays the same throughout the whole series, but one of the main differences in this game is when he tells the player "Thanks for buying Animal Crossing!", which breaks down the fourth wall, where characters in a game or television program talk directly to the audience, or in this case, the playable character. As aforementioned, he appears when the GameCube resets or is turned off without saving. He will appear outside the player's house, giving a lecture of why saving is important. Resetting frequently will lead to him forcing the player to repeat a line of text to remind them of the importance of saving. Some of the sentences that the player may have to repeat are: "I repent", "I'm sorry", or even "I like you." Sometimes, he will pretend to reset the game himself, mentioning beforehand that all the progress the player has made will be lost. After the "reset" takes place, the screen will pop back up, and Mr. Resetti laughs saying: "It was all a joke." If you reset enough, Resetti will start to say his doctor told him not to yell so much.

In Animal Forest e+[]

The Music for the Resetti Monitoring Center

In Animal Forest e+, the player can visit the Reset Monitoring Center where Mr. Resetti and Don Resetti monitor resetting across the globe. To visit the Center, the player must speak to Mr. Resetti by resetting twice. Then, they must hit all the rocks in the town with a shovel. Once a week, a random rock may crack; hitting it again will reveal a hole the player can jump into to enter the Reset Monitoring Center. The "Reset Alarm" may go off while visiting. Don Resetti can also appear in the Reset Monitoring Center if he is met after resetting; one, both, or none of the moles may be present when the player visits.

In Wild World[]

In Wild World, he portrays the same role as in the GameCube game. However, he may be seen within The Roost located inside the Museum on Sundays between 2:30 PM and 4:00 PM drinking coffee with a relaxed attitude. Resetti will converse about his work while maintaining calm demeanor when directing to the player.

He will also appear if an error occurs when using DS to DS or Nintendo WFC communication and will reset your game.

In City Folk[]

Resetti CF

His role in City Folk stays the same as in Animal Crossing and Wild World, but he can now be encountered in new area in the city, called the Reset Surveillance Center, with his older brother occasionally making an appearance at the venue. This appears if the player has luck and the cones are out of the way, to the right of the city near the tunnel where he may give the player a Silver Shovel to leave the area. He will also appear the second time the game is accessed by the same player, to talk about the importance of saving, regardless of whether or not the game has been turned off or reset with or without saving. This is the only time he will appear by the player's house for something positive.

In New Leaf[]

Resetti at Reset -1

Meeting Resetti at reset #1 in New Leaf.

Resetti's role and personality has softened in New Leaf compared to other installments in the Animal Crossing series. In New Leaf he similarly but not to an extent scolds the player for quitting without saving their game. But for the first time, Resetti is optional: after the first time the player quits without saving, he will appear in the lobby and talk about how he cannot appear again until the Resetti Surveillance Center has been built. From then on, Isabelle will remind players about saving their game when they quit without saving unless the Resetti Surveillance Center is built.

The Resetti Surveillance Center can be bought as a Public Works Project by the Mayor of the Town for 360,000 Bells. This time, it is inside a manhole which occasionally opens in the player's town after 8:00 PM, allowing the player to enter.

When the Reset Surveillance Center is built, Resetti will appear every time the player quits without saving the game. When he appears, he will ask why the player reset, giving the player the options of "I wanted to reset!", "My batteries died", and "I don't remember."

  • If the player chooses "I don't remember," Resetti says that he can't help you if you don't remember, and quickly leaves.
    • On the first reset, this option is replaced with "I had no choice", if this option is chosen, Resetti expresses shock, and sympathizes with the player.
  • If the player chooses "My batteries died," Resetti will give a short lecture on how keeping batteries charged is important, then will leave.
  • If the player chooses "I wanted to reset," then Resetti will give a much longer speech, similar to previous Animal Crossing games. This option is also the only way to make Resetti angrier with the player each time he visits.

By not ever saying "I wanted to reset", or not building the Surveillance Center in the first place, this marks the first time to where the player can avoid being lectured or yelled at by Resetti every time the player would reset their game.

Resetti roost

Resetti having coffee at The Roost in New Leaf.

Once after the Reset Surveillance Center is built within the town, Resetti can be found having coffee in The Roost.

Resetti can be seen if an error blurb is executed while playing with the gates open.

As of the Welcome amiibo update, Resetti will make an appearance after the player sells their town to Tom Nook after at least 50 days since it was first created. Afterwards, Tom Nook will tell them that he has invited an "old friend" as the player starts their new life. Resetti will then tell the player some advice for starting a new life, before dismissing them afterwards.

In Happy Home Designer[]

Resetti can be called from the amiibo phone through scanning his amiibo Card. While on the amiibo phone, the player can ask Resetti about designing or remodeling his house for both him and his brother Don Resetti. Unlike other games, he does not constantly rant about resets, but he does remind the player not to reset, and says so as he first addresses to the player after calling him.

In amiibo Festival[]

Resetti is a playable character in amiibo Festival, available when the Resetti amiibo is scanned on the Wii U. Sometimes when the player playing as Resetti lands on an event square in the Amiibo Festival Board Game mode, a random event specifically related to Resetti may appear. For example, sometimes there will be an event relating to Resetti ordering a pizza for Don at the Reset Surveillance Center.

Resetti has 6 unlockable costumes for the game, unlocked through leveling up the Resetti amiibo:

  • Reset construction worker (Level 1)
  • Reset construction worker without hat (Level 2)
  • White sweatshirt (Level 3)
  • Formalwear with a red bow tie (Level 4)
  • East-Asian outfit (Level 5)
  • Black jacket with a blue cap (Level 6)

In New Horizons[]

According to a Mashable Interview with Aya Kyogoku,[1] Resetti has been laid off from work at the Surveillance Center and must find new work elsewhere, as the autosave function makes resetting impossible. He now appears to be in charge of Nook Inc.'s Rescue Service, which for a small fee will transport the player back to their home if they get lost or stuck. This is proven when the player doesn't have the Nook Miles to pay for the Rescue Service, and Resetti tells himself to calm down.

As of the 2.0 update, Resetti can occasionally be found at The Roost. His amiibo can also be scanned to invite him to The Roost, Photopia, or Animal Crossing: New Horizons - Happy Home Paradise. When interacted, he may talk about his past experiences as a Surveillance Center officer.

In Dōbutsu no Mori[]

I feel for you, kid, I do. Now SCRAM!!!
― Mr. Resetti, Animal Crossing: The Movie

Resetti has a minor role in Gekijōban Dōbutsu no Mori. He makes his appearance when Ai falls over when Yu is chasing a dragonfly flying around her. He appears just after she lands on Apollo's flower patch. He warns her of the rules in Animal Village but lets her off because the damage to the flowers was accidental. He also appears when Yu and Alfonso are seen digging holes looking for fossils. Yu accidentally bangs Resetti with a shovel, and the mole gives a lecture about this "Diggin' Spree," but Yu ditches him. Resetti then goes back underground to fix a leak. He can also be seen helping to decorate for the Winter Festival.

Other Appearances[]

In Super Smash Bros. Melee[]

Mr. Resetti himself does not appear in Super Smash Bros. Melee, but his trophy can be obtained when the player defeats five Fighting Wire Frames in Cruel Melee in Multi Man Melee Mode. It is worth noting that this marks as Mr. Resetti's first technical appearance outside Japan.

Trophy Information[]

Prepare to receive a really long talking-to if you reset this game: the next time you play, Mr. Resetti will be waiting to deliver his best scolding. No matter what your intentions are, pressing the RESET Button will bring you face-to-face with this fervent character. Sometimes, the only way to shut him up is to apologize.

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl[]

Resetti SSB

Resetti in SSBB.

Mr. Resetti appears as an Assist Trophy in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, where a blurb amasses the screen while ranting through a long lecture. His dialogue box obstructs either the top or bottom half of the screen. Mr. Resetti will also respond to stage events, such as characters falling asleep or getting knocked out. He also tries to mock characters, like doing a Kirby Impression. Mr. Resetti notably breaks the 4th wall within the game, as he exclaims that he is not pleased about being "thought of as an item", referring to the fact that he can be summoned through the Assist Trophy. A more obvious example of breaking the 4th wall is how he appears as if the game was reset on summoning most of the time, as well as he somewhat covers the stage view.

Trophy Information[]

Resetti has two Trophies in Brawl, one with him in the ground, and one with his feet shown. Both are unlocked at random.

In Ground Trophy Text[]
AnimalCrossing

Resetti in Super Smash Bros: Brawl.

A mole wearing a hard hat who'll show up when you restart your game without having saved. He pops up and lets you know in no uncertain terms the importance of saving your game. The problem is, his speeches are entertaining enough to warrant breaking the rules at least once. In Animal Crossing, his brother Don appears too. He's the polar opposite of his sibling.

Exposed Feet Trophy Text[]

A character who normally appears from underground to lecture the player. However, he is not always underground—in Animal Crossing: Wild World, he can be found sipping coffee at the Roost if you go at a certain time on a certain day. In the Japanese-only "e+" version, he works at a so-called "Resetti Observation Center" where you can pop in for a visit.

In Super Smash Bros. Wii U/3DS[]

Mr. Resetti no longer appears as an Assist Trophy, however, is briefly referenced in Super Smash Bros. Wii U during Palutena's guidance conversation regarding the villager.

Viridi: Oh look, it's the Villager!
Pit: Villager, huh? That's not a very creative name.
Viridi: Well, what else do you call someone from a village? Anyway, you've got to respect the Villager. Word has it no one fights fairer than that one.
Pit: Why's that?
Viridi: Probably because where the Villager's from, there's a mole who goes around punishing cheaters.
Pit: Resetti!
Palutena: Anyway, the Villager's Lloid Rocket can do some real damage, so try your best to reflect it back.

Trophy Information[]

Be sure to save your game before you turn it off, or this guy will show up screaming "AAAAAAARGH!" Sonny Resetti and his favorite brother, Don, keep an eye out for sudden game resets, and they aren't shy about reminding you to save often. Best not to aggravate them needlessly...

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[]

Mr. Resetti appears as an Ace-level Grab-type spirit. His spirit can only be obtained by either combining the spirit cores of Mettaur, Dugtrio, Muddy Mole and any two Attack-type cores, or by scanning a Mr. Resetti amiibo only once.

In Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate[]

Capcom revealed outfits based on Isabelle and Mr. Resetti via its Unity blog and confirmed that Felines' meow sound will be altered accordingly when they are equipped.

In Mario Kart 8[]

In Mario Kart 8, Mr. Resetti appears as an obstacle in the Animal Crossing race course, included with the Animal Crossing × Mario Kart 8 downloadable content package. He appears in every season with the exception of winter, and he plays a role similar to the Monty Mole, occasionally popping out of the ground as an obstacle for racers.

Trivia[]

  • Resetti's first name is revealed to be "Sonny" in Animal Crossing and City Folk.
  • He shares a birthday with cranky penguin Hopper on April 6. While they both existed in Gekijōban Dōbutsu no Mori, they were unaware of each other's presence.
  • Mr. Resetti has the voice of a lazy villager in City Folk and New Leaf, and the voice of a smug villager in New Horizons.
  • Resetti resembles Muddy Mole from Mole Mania for the Gameboy.
  • Mr. Resetti is similar to Lucky from Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, both of which dislike resetting. However, Lucky fines Mario 500 coins if he resets the clock settings.
  • If the player resets a certain amount of times, Resetti's brother Don will come, who is not as grouchy as him, as he will only give you a warning.
  • Vicious Vole Vinnie is the cousin of Don and Sonny Resetti. Resetti mentions him in Animal Crossing and Wild World. Should the player fail to save on multiple occasions, Resetti threatens violence, suggesting that, "I might even go a few rounds with my cousin, Vicious Vole Vinnie."
  • Resetti visits The Roost like other special characters. This is the first time players are capable of encountering him with a full view outside of the Japanese versions. The second being in the Resetti Surveillance Center.
  • By introducing and triggering certain hacks into the game a player may be able to rid Resetti of their town. Additionally, when proposing a tangible item on the surface of his appearance (i.e. a tree on the pavement where he props up), this will result in the game to automatically crash.
  • In Animal Crossing, if the player starts the game after resetting the GameCube during play, Mr. Resetti will appear to complain. Repeatedly reset the GameCube to make him more and more angry.
  • In Animal Crossing, when Resetti introduces himself, he says, "The name's Resetti. Mr. Resetti." This might be a reference (or a parody) to the James Bond films.
  • In Animal Crossing, Resetti is sometimes hidden in the credits while listening to K.K. Slider.
  • In City Folk, during the 7th Reset Dialogue, he claims to have a video game known as "Super Moleo Bros." This is most likely a spoof of Super Mario Bros.
  • Contrary to popular belief, Resetti does not delete the player's town permanently in European copies of City Folk if they reset 50 times.
  • According to a couple of City Folk and New Leaf dialogues, he gets sick quite often, and that might be why he sometimes pops out not facing the player.
  • In New Leaf, Resetti's Center was defunded by the government's budget revision process (in a parody of real world events), and therefore he will only appear after you build a new Surveillance Center for him. The developers said in an Iwata Asks Interview that this was done because Resetti was hated by some players, and there were accounts of his lectures making younger players cry.[5]
  • In New Leaf, it is impossible to check pockets or open doors while Resetti is summonable.
  • In New Leaf, during the sixth reset he will say to the player "What I'm suggestin' to ya, ya little twerp, is that ya try playin' this game WITHOUT resettin'.", but in Welcome amiibo it was changed to "[...] ya, ya little... mole agitator, [...]".
  • In New Leaf, inviting Resetti to the campground and speaking to him reveals that the character actually has kids.[6]
  • His birthday, the 6th of April, when written as 6/4 in some countries or parts of the world, can appear to be a reference to the console where he first appeared - the Nintendo 64.
