A river is one of the six types of water in Animal Crossing, the others being the ocean, the river pool, the pond, the lake, and the waterfall. They stretch from the top of the town and empty into the ocean at the bottom. A river begins as a waterfall at the northern edge of town and passes through the town.
While the river flows through the town, it will pass through a river pool, several bridges, and, in Population, Growing! and City Folk, a second waterfall. In some towns, a river may fork into two, forming an island. A majority of the fish can be caught in a river. The river ends at the estuary, where it flows into the sea. Some towns may have two estuaries, caused by the river forking into two. Some fish, like Salmon, can only be caught in an estuary. In City Folk, estuaries can uncommonly form a landform known as a bay.
