The River (Clifftop) has appeared in every Animal Crossing game since Animal Forest for the Nintendo 64.
To access this location the player must walk up an incline. In New Horizons, the player gets access to this location only after receiving the ladder from Tom Nook after three new villagers have moved in.
There were no different fish in this location until New Horizons, which added four new fish, including one that can only be caught in a River (Clifftop) pond.
