Sanrio series December 2023-February 2024 re-release social media teaser for Pocket Camp
Sanrio is a Japanese entertainment company based on the kawaii popular culture founded in 1960 (though its fame began in the mid-1970s), and, like Nintendo, is at a multi-billiondollar level, primarily due to its long-running flagship series, Hello Kitty. It is globally popular for its cute anthropomorphic animal characters not unlike the cast of Animal Crossing and its mascot is Hello Kitty. Some of its most well-known characters include My Melody, Cinnamoroll, Kuromi, Keroppi, Pompompurin, Pochacco or Kiki & Lala (Little Twin Stars). By using the Sanrio series amiibo cards, first released in 2016, players can invite unique villagers inspired by Sanrio properties to their games in both Welcome amiibo and New Horizons. The properties featured include the aforementioned characters.
An example of the Sanrio series furniture in Pocket Camp, based on the Hello Kitty character
In Pocket Camp, in 2021 and 2023, Nintendo and Sanrio made a special collaboration called "Pocket Camp X Sanrio" to make players unlock Sanrio furniture based on the Hello Kitty franchise, albeit at a high cost of Leaf Tickets, and the special villagers can be befriended as well during the event. However, like the Mario, Splatoon, and Pokémon (Eevee) events, as it is only for a limited time and being extremely rare in general, they are no longer available and also not included in the Pocket Camp Complete version. However, despite being officially discontinued, it is recently discovered by players that each of the exclusive items remain in the game's code. Therefore, they can still be illegitimately accessed by hacking the internal save data. They are also entirely unavailable in New Leaf, as this game, like Pocket Camp, is currently shut down since the Nintendo 3DS/Wii U online servers are disconnected by Nintendo in April 2024.

Trivia[]
- Another known case of Sanrio characters being featured in another Nintendo game is Super Mario Maker for the Wii U, where Hello Kitty or My Melody can replace Mario via a Mystery Mushroom costume in "Super Mario Bros." mode.
- This is one of a few non-Nintendo cameos in the Animal Crossing franchise.
- Ironically, Sanrio has created a life simulation game of their own called Hello Kitty Island Adventure, where its gameplay is similar to that of the Animal Crossing series.
