Special stump patterns are a feature that occurs in New Leaf. When a tree is cut down with an axe, the resulting stump has a chance of having a special stump pattern appearing on it instead of the regular circular pattern. Cutting down the tree with a normal axe has a rare chance, while the silver axe almost always produces one with a special pattern. The gold axe sometimes produces these special patterns, but not as often as the silver axe. There are a total of 12 special patterns with the regular (oak) and cedar trees have 6 each.
Mushrooms grow near special stumps at all times of the year -- something that lazy villagers will often point out.
