Donation to the museum[]

In New Leaf[]

In New Leaf, a plaque by the display offers information about the fossil instead of Blathers.

"The spinosaurus is famous for the sail on its back, made up of skin stretched over spikelike bones. The assumption is that these sails were used to help regulate body temperature, common for reptiles. In addition to having this large sail, it is also the largest of the carnivorous dinosaurs. Despite being so commanding, its diet most likely consisted of fish from swampy, marshy regions."

In New Horizons[]

In New Horizons, Upon donation or selecting "Tell me more about this!", Blathers the curator will say:

"Ahem. Yes. The Spinosaurus was a very large, carnivorous dinosaur, roughly the size of a T.Rex. Unlike its more famous cousin, however, Spinosaurus seems to have spent a great deal of time in water. Similar to modern crocodiles, this creature lived on a diet of fish AND land-dwelling animals. Personally, I am simply relieved that it did not seek FLYING prey."

The spinosaurus is displayed on the left side of the second fossil room, between T. rex and deinonychus.

A reconstruction of Spinosaurus

Main article: Spinosaurus on Wikipedia

Spinosaurus aegyptiacus was a species of theropod dinosaur that lived during the Cretaceous period, about 112-93.5 million years ago. It mainly lived in what is today northern Africa; its type species was named after Egypt, where the first recorded discovery occurred in 1912. It is the largest known carnivorous dinosaur, outsizing even Tyrannosaurus rex. Its behavior and build were crocodilian and it hunted on both land and sea. Its long, narrow build would have made it a great swimmer. Its distinctive sail may have been used for body temperature regulation or for display, such as for intimidation or courtship; however, many scientists now theorize that this sail was actually a fatty hump. Additionally, many researchers now believe it may have walked on all four legs instead of just two. Spinosaurus has also been preserved in pop culture, having been featured in the 2001 film Jurassic Park III.
