Squirrels (リス, Risu) are a species of villager in the Animal Crossing series. They are most noted for their fluffy, curled tails.

There are twenty-two squirrel villagers, of which sixteen are female and six are male. Of these twenty-two squirrels, four are peppy, four are snooty, seven are normal, one is lazy, one is sisterly, two are jock, one is smug, and two are cranky.

Note that Agent S has a helmet that is impossible to remove no matter what hats you put on her.

The normal squirrel currently known as Sally has technically appeared in all the main Animal Crossing games, but in the first 4 GameCube games (Animal Forest, Animal Forest+, Animal Crossing: Population Growing, Animal Forest e+), she was called Hazel. In a similar vein, another normal squirrel, currently known as Cally, used to be called Sally on the GameCube, but when she appeared in New Leaf, she was renamed Cally.

Most squirrels' names and catchphrases relate to nuts, a favorite food of squirrels.

Animal Crossing's squirrel villagers showcase diverse personalities. Peppy squirrels have short attention spans and can be upset easily, yet they bond well with lazy, normal, jock, sisterly, and other peppy villagers. However, they may irritate cranky and snooty villagers. Other squirrels may be snooty, normal, lazy, sisterly, jock, smug, or cranky, with each personality influencing their dialogue, voice, and villager interactions.
