US/PAL difference[]

I just caught a soft-shelled turtle, but I noticed I got the US pun involving shell shock. Does this mean that not all PAL copies have the new pun? I got my copy on launch day (June 14th). —Preceding unsigned comment added by Shaorune (talkcontribs)

This may be a long shot, but maybe the pun actually depends on if your player is the mayor? The butterfly fish's pun is dependent on that, at least. —Eku53ru (Talk | contribs) 02:38, August 3, 2013 (UTC)

Getting "shelled it out"[]

Both my character (mayor) and the person I share my town with got "I really shelled it out!" as the pun when catching the turtle; as the above butterfly fish theory is squashed, has anyone caught enough turtles to see if it's like the sea bass pun, or something else? —Eku53ru (Talk | contribs) 04:55, August 6, 2013 (UTC)

An update to this--I received assistance with pun testing, and the fourth or fifth turtle used the shell shock pun. If anyone else wants to pitch in on this testing, it would be greatly appreciated. —Eku53ru (Talk | contribs) 23:28, August 9, 2013 (UTC)
I've only caught one, and it was in a different person's town on a NA game (mine is EU), and it used the 'shelled it out' line - Dragonfree97 [talk] 23:40, August 9, 2013 (UTC)
I'm on the same boat (one capture with "shelled it out"), too. The person catching the most turtles in my town just got another "shelled it out." She's suggesting that it might have to do with the time of day it was caught? —Eku53ru (Talk | contribs) 00:17, August 10, 2013 (UTC)
I've only seen the shelled it out pun, and that is catching more than 5 after 4pm. Taliseth ♈....(sing)✦✦✦✧✧Dolphin signa 00:26, August 10, 2013 (UTC)
Hmm. The "shell shock" screenshot posted on the article is timestamped 5:59; my "shell it out" turtle was 18:42, and the "shell shock" turtle screenshot I have access to is from 23:36, which may suggest it's a late-night/early-morning thing. This is most confusing. —Eku53ru (Talk | contribs) 00:36, August 10, 2013 (UTC)
I caught one last night at around 1:30-2:00 with the shell shock caption. Maybe from midnight onwards the shell shock caption is used? - MerrytonRyan - (profile) - (talk) 10:17, August 10, 2013 (UTC)
Seems so. This "shell it out" one from ACNL's Wikia has a timestamp of 22:17, while this one from Nookipedia is 08:02. With these screenshots, the above data, and the AC day as boundaries, it looks like it's 23:00~07:59. —Eku53ru (Talk | contribs) 11:11, August 10, 2013 (UTC)
Not forgetting that there are 3 quotes listed for this species, not 2. Taliseth ♈....(sing)✦✦✦✧✧Dolphin signa 16:40, August 10, 2013 (UTC)
I just thought of something. Could the reason for the different puns have something to do with the Japanese game? If someone could find and translate the Soft-shelled Turtle's puns, perhaps they could come up with something. Shaorune (talk) 21:19, August 10, 2013 (UTC)
Ah, there are three quotes now because I realized a bit late that the NA version uses different wording for that quote (I'm playing a NA copy).
I looked into Shaorune's suggestion, and he/she seems to have stumbled on a lead(?). This screenshot and this one seem to be the original puns. スッポンポン (すっぽんぽん Supponpon?) means butt-naked and is a joke on the turtle's name (Suppon). 月とスッポン (月と鼈 Tsuki to Suppon?), on the other hand, is an idiom that is roughly equivalent to "like chalk and cheese" in English. In this case, it compares the turtle (shell) to the moon. It might be exclusive to nighttime (or when the moon is visible?), but it could still be random. My town's co-owner caught a "shell shock" turtle before 23:00, which debunks the hours I previously proposed. —Eku53ru (Talk | contribs) 05:28, August 11, 2013 (UTC)
An update--I've caught three more from 21:00-22:00, and all were "shell shock" turtles with the moon out. If this theory holds true, it's a neat, lost-in-translation requirement. From the turtle data, the time bracket is at least from 21:00-05:59. —Eku53ru (Talk | contribs) 09:28, August 14, 2013 (UTC)
Confirmed. Caught turtles from 21-22pm. On moon out "shell shock" pun given, on other day the normal pun was said. Taliseth ♈....(sing)✦✦✦✧✧Dolphin signa 04:46, August 22, 2013 (UTC)
Awesome! I also found that this Japanese wiki lists the time as between 19:00-04:59, but it's probably easier to keep it as "when the moon's out" on the article. —Eku53ru [ talk | contribs ] 05:14, August 23, 2013 (UTC)

Adding the puns[]

Can someone get the Japanese caught puns and add them to the page under the english ones? Its a tradition this wiki has kind of lost.  Taliseth ♈....(sing)✦✦✦✧✧Dolphin signa 15:55, August 14, 2013 (UTC)

Er, they're linked above, but I went ahead and added them. I'm guessing people who own the games and can understand them haven't been frequenting this Wiki as often? I can probably add more if I fish around with Google. —Eku53ru (Talk | contribs) 22:58, August 14, 2013 (UTC)
I once tried, but I have no knowledge of Japanese. I installed a software/keyboard for Japanese but it just took me a couple of hours to find the characters to compose the sentences. My further attempts have not succeeded either. Taliseth ♈....(sing)✦✦✦✧✧Dolphin signa 23:21, August 14, 2013 (UTC)
Ack, I can see how that's a hassle. :( If you happen to have a backlog of puns (e.g., screenshots) you wanted to add but couldn't, I'll gladly do it. While I'm not fluent, I understand enough Japanese to get by in the games. —Eku53ru (Talk | contribs) 23:38, August 14, 2013 (UTC)
Yes, it can be. Translation isn't really an issue, I just want the characters/text addded. I'll bring this onto your message wall to avoid it taking space on here.

Hmm, does anyone else find the barrage of caught quotes really untidy? Particularly on the Coelacanth page? It's even worse if the quotes go underneath the infobox (so they appear to the left of it). I think we may need to discuss this over in the project talk page.
Also, as far as I am aware, there was no tradition to add Japanese caught quotes, as they served no purpose seeing as this is an English wiki. There were English translations, but not full Japanese quotations (for the simple fact so few people know what they say) - MerrytonRyan - (profile) - (talk) 11:42, August 15, 2013 (UTC)
I definitely noticed that as I was adding them--my apologies for the mess. I'll start something up on the talk page. —Eku53ru (Talk | contribs) 11:53, August 15, 2013 (UTC)
There was a tradition, but only for a short time. It faded quite quickly. This wiki shouldn't not add something just because its not English. We give the Japanese equivalents/translations in multiple other areas. Perhaps we could add a collapsible section though to tidy them up, especially in the case of the Bee and Mosquito pages.
