In New Horizons, tools can either be crafted at a DIY Workbench or bought from Timmy and Tommy's shop. Tools have varying durability based on prefixes such as flimsy for axes made with stone and tree branches. Tools can be repaired by either upgrading it to a higher durability or by customizing it (if possible) which resets the tools durability.
Misses do not count toward the tool’s durability. For example, a shovel will only break after shoveling up the max number of items it can (e.g., digging up 100 fossils). The player can dig 100 holes and it won’t affect the shovels durability or cause it to break unless they dig up 100 items.
Tool Ring[]
The tool ring is a feature obtained by purchasing the Tool Ring: It's Essential at the Nook Stop for 800 . Once purchased, this allows the player to press up on the directional pad to access a tool wheel with 8 slots for tools. With this, the player can easily swap directly to the tool they wish to use.
When added to the inventory, tools are automatically assigned to the wheel if a slot is available starting with the 12 o'clock position on the wheel and working clockwise until the wheel is filled out. Once full, new tools will not be registered automatically but can be assigned to the slot of the players' choice. This is done either by pressing "x" while the wheel is open or by selecting the tool in the inventory and assigning it as a favorite.
Fishing rods[]
During the Fishing Tourney, fishing rods will not break if their durability reaches 0 while catching fish for C.J. However, every successful catch contributes towards degrading the tool and it will break after the next catch outside of the 3-minute timer.

Shovels[]
Shovels lose durability only when digging up items or hitting rocks. Digging holes where there is nothing to uproot or dig up, as well as burying items, do not affect the shovel's durability; however hitting a rock will deplete durability, even if no material is produced from that hit. Shovels will not break if the targeted rock can still drop items while the durability reaches 0 but will break in the next use outside of this condition.

Axes[]
Axes' durability is depleted only when they come in contact with a tree or rock, and each hit will contribute to lower it, even if the target has already been depleted of its resources.

Watering cans[]
Watering cans will lose 1 durability every time they are used to water dry flowers. Watering ground with no flowers placed on it will reduce the durability of the watering can by 1/20th of the regular rate. No durability will be taken from a watering can if the player water flowers that have already been watered that day.

Trivia[]
- Currently there is no way for the player to track how many more uses a tool has in-game before it breaks.
- Customizing a tool resets its durability.
- The player cannot drop/swap a tool they're currently holding. If their inventory is full and they attempt to pick up the item, the game requires them to drop/swap, then their held equipment breaks, leaving an empty inventory slot.
- Although not categorized as tools, crafting an umbrella, fence, pan flute, or an ocarina will count toward the "DIY Tools" Stamp Card.
