"I got a umbrella Octopus! Too bad I'm already soaked" —New Horizons

In New Horizons[]

Upon donation or selecting "Tell me more about this!", Blathers the curator will say:

"My feathers, could there be a more adorable sea creature than the umbrella octopus! I daresay not! Those deep-sea octopuses are on the smallish side and use the cutest ear-like fins to flutter about. Meanwhile, it's the web stretched between their tentacles that gives them their name. Hoo, it's true! With arms stretched wide, they look for all the world like an umbrella! Though surely the last thing the umbrella octopus wants...is to stay dry."

Main article: Umbrella octopus on Wikipedia

Umbrella octopuses are a species of octopus that live in the deepest parts of the ocean where sunlight can't reach, around 400-4,800 meters deep. The features of the umbrella octopus include their earlike fins that help them move, soft bodies, bell-shaped heads, and webs of skin that connect the arms. There are around 13 different species of umbrella octopus living in the ocean, the Dumbo octopus and flapjack octopus being among those 13 species. Unlike other octopus species, umbrella octopuses do not have ink sacs. Due to the octopus living in a pitch-black environment, they don't need ink sacs as a defense mechanism. Umbrella octopuses are believed to be found worldwide, being observed in different parts around New Zealand, Australia, California, the Philippines, and New Guinea.
